Senior Dakotah Mandina went to Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri this past Friday to audition for placement into their music department.  He auditioned for Dr. Julliana Moore. She is the flute professor and music theory teacher at Truman State University.

According to our interview with Dakotah, Dr. Moore looks for an overall mastery and high standard of musical ability to be accepted for any instrument.  Dakotah Mandina’s performance was on the flute.  The piece he performed for Dr. Moore was “Syrinx” by Debussy.  Dakotah has been accepted however he will know more about his scholarship eligibility next month.

According to Dakotah, Truman State University stuck out to him because they have an excellent music program.  He said, “The acceptance rate is good and the college is close to home.”

One Bismarck music tradition that Dakotah will miss once he graduates will be the sense of family he feels here.  He feels like he knows all of his ensemble players very well at Bismarck.  He is really going to miss that at the college level.

Dakotah was asked about how Mr. Mayberry influenced his musical career.   Dakotah replied, “I know that some past teachers would not have been so personally involved in my overall musical growth.  Mr. Mayberry goes out of his way and shows that he cares about each music student.”

This level of care really shows since Mr. Mayberry drove Dakotah to his musical performance.  The 4.5-hour journey to Kirksville was a long one but was extremely beneficial for Mandina.

Dakotah hopes to pursue a music performance career at Truman State University.  If that doesn’t work out, he hopes to pursue a teaching degree with an emphasis in music or mathematics.

Congratulations Dakotah on your tremendous accomplishment!!  Good luck on your musical journey!
